KADOKAWA Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tsuyoshi Natsuno) will release the book “The World of Hideki Kamiya: Complete Design Works” on Thursday, April 2, 2026. The book will be available in Japanese at bookstores nationwide and through online retailers.

We’re also excited to share a special message below from Hideki Kamiya himself to mark the occasion. In it, he discusses the process that led to the book’s publication, his thoughts on his works, and his philosophy as a creator.

This book presents game designer Hideki Kamiya’s philosophy on game development and his thoughts on the titles he has worked on, featuring nearly 150,000 characters of text alongside hundreds of concept drawings and pieces of artwork.

Gain the inside scoop on Kamiya’s complete body of work across his 30-year career in game development.

This book is a comprehensive look at every game Kamiya has worked on, featuring:
– Resident Evil 2
– Devil May Cry
– Viewtiful Joe
– Okami
– The “Bayonetta” series (including “Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon”)
– The Wonderful 101
– Sol Cresta

He also discusses his formative childhood experiences and the events that first led him to work at a video game company. This volume thoroughly documents the development stories behind the titles he has created, as well as inspirations behind his ideas.

Don’t miss Kamiya’s firsthand accounts of the untold stories behind the creation of his most iconic characters!
Kamiya also shares his thoughts on where he’s headed next as both a director and a creator.

Message from Hideki Kamiya
To me, all the titles featured in this book are like my own children. These are games that have walked alongside me throughout my entire life. To be able to compile them all into a single volume like this and delve deeply into the memories and behind-the-scenes stories associated with each one feels like a miraculous opportunity.

None of these titles were the result of my efforts alone; they were created for various different companies at different times, with completely different team members each time. So when KADOKAWA first approached me with this project, I was fully on board, yet simultaneously skeptical about whether we could actually pull it off given all the potential hurdles. However, thanks to the kind approval of the rights holders for each title, as well as the numerous creators I mention in the book, this unlikely project has come to fruition.

I’ve written freely and candidly about each title from my perspective as someone who was right in the thick of its development at the time. I’ve put the scenes from my memory into words exactly as I recall them, hoping to convey at least a glimpse into the circumstances under which each game took shape, what the development environment was like, and the atmosphere at the time.

Furthermore, I’ve laid bare my entire mind, from my journey as a game designer and my way of thinking to the inspirations behind all my ideas, in the hope that this will be useful not only to video game fans, but also to anyone aspiring to become game creators themselves.

It’s a long read, but hopefully not a difficult one, as I’ve done my best to speak as plainly as possible, just like with this message. And by the time you finish, I hope your love for each of these titles will have deepened even further.
